beginning and ending of words. They then learn
double-letter sounds as well as the rules to tell
them when the vowels say their long sounds. Students

says ‘g’ as in ‘gent’.
After this, students learn increasingly complex
sounds (known as diphthongs). They also learn
the vowel sounds with ‘r’ and how
to recognise silent letters in words.
